Over Three-Fourths of U.S. Residential Four-Year Colleges and Universities are Bringing All Students Back to Campus

Despite Health Concerns US Students are Back on Campus; Many Classes are Virtual Even as Students are in Dormitories

Seventy-eight percent of US four-year colleges and universities are having all students return to campus this Fall, according to a survey of the 950 largest schools in the country by Burbio, a data service that aggregates school and community calendar information nationwide. Ten percent are inviting a portion of the students to return to campus with only twelve percent of four-year colleges offering purely ‘virtual’ experiences to their students.

The information is gathered through data compiled through August 25th. While instances of schools reversing in-person campus experiences were captured in the survey – Michigan State being the most prominent example – on balance college students are returning to campus in overwhelming numbers.

“Despite challenges to managing health services, and the logistics of everything from moving in, to dining, colleges have made a clear commitment to getting students back on campus,” said Julie Roche, Burbio co-founder.

As of August 24th, two-thirds of the schools planning in person returns had already started. By August 31st, 88% of schools planning in person returns will have students on campus, with the balance starting later in September.

This is not to confuse students being on campus with the style of learning. All colleges are offering virtual learning regardless of where students are living. “Our survey focuses on the economic impact students can have on local communities and where they will do their spending and, Covid restrictions being a reality, their socializing,” added Roche. “Local businesses will see more activity than if the students were not there.”

In addition to school start dates, Burbio’s data also measures whether students will return campus after Thanksgiving or stay home until January as a Covid-related precaution. Currently 60% of schools that have announced plans are either ending the semester before Thanksgiving or having students take classes and finals remotely.
