Pedestrian footfall in Manchester has sunk to 50% of year-on-year levels as tighter restrictions and ambiguity over lockdown policy impacts mobility and trade.
Through the summer, Huq’s mobility indicator for the city shows a steady recovery to levels of around 75% of 2019 by September, however this has dropped sharply over the last week. This reduction in footfall is also impacting footfall into shops and stores on the high-street, with visits almost halving in the last few weeks to just 25% of usual levels. Workplace attendance and the hospitality sector have both experienced similar drops. How much of the decrease can be attributed to tighter restrictions or to local residents exercising their discretion is unclear.
However, with cases rising sharply, reports of hospitals running out of beds and increased pressure to go into ‘Tier 3’, Huq will continue to provide daily measurements of both pedestrian footfall and store visits to help observers keep track of these rapidly evolving circumstances.
