Footfall to UK restaurants has risen sharply following the end of the second national lockdown, but levels remain around a fifth of what they usually are at this time of year.
The Huq Index suggests that the recovery of restaurant trade could be taking more of a ‘V’ shape than the gradual recovery seen after the first national lockdown ended on 4 July. However, with many businesses in tier three forced to offer takeaway only and spontaneous footfall severely hindered, the weekly mean has yet to rise any higher than 20% of usual levels.
With pubs across the country having to pivot their usual business and many that don’t offer food forced to close, the pub sector has yet to reach a tenth of usual levels.
