Consulting firms have long been a career launching pad to young professionals, promising a feather in the proverbial career cap to employees in exchange for grueling work hours. A key part of this bargain is that consulting firms select top students which add to the prestige of the firm itself.
We recently published a piece (with Business Insider) tracking the prestige of law firms, based on the rankings of the law schools they acquire talent from. Today, we’re tracking the prestige of consulting firms, where educational background is even more heavily relied on.
We can see that the “Big Three” consulting firms, McKinsey, Bain, and BCG, hire mostly from top universities, whereas Accenture is recruiting much more from lower-tier universities.
When we track prestige over time, we see a falling status of the big 3, with MMC rising the most.
Takeaways:
Bain is ahead of the pack by a considerable margin, with McKinsey and BCG tied for second place.
MMC, a holding company to Oliver Wyman, Mercer, and Nera, most notably, has been rising in status relative to the big 4 Accounting firms.
Accenture, the largest of the consulting firms, has had a lower prestige score for a long time, but is working hard to close the gap with the big 4 accounting firms.
