Eager shoppers appear to have flocked to the high street with the end of lockdown, causing footfall to UK clothing stores to rise to 62% of YoY levels in the last few days.
Huq’s Index shows how the second national lockdown and forced closure of many stores saw footfall levels drop to just 15% of YoY levels – almost as low as they did in April. However, pent up demand for a fashion fix and Christmas shop appears to be stimulating recovery and some shoppers have been quick to return.
While footfall has risen sharply over the last week, attendance is still around 40pts down on last year at a crucial time for the sector. With Debenhams and Arcadia facing collapse, time will reveal the impact of shifting consumer behaviour and what’s in store for bricks and mortar.
