Going to the pub or having a meal out continued to grow in popularity in the UK over August, as the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme helped to push pub visits over 83% for the first time since lockdown.
Huq’s Restaurants & Pubs Index shows that footfall to pubs saw a sharp rise over the last week, reaching the new series high on Saturday (22 August) and that Government incentives appear to have given consumers more confidence about supporting their local. Visits to Restaurants and Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) has also continued to rise, reaching new highs of 68% and 67% over the last week.
Prior to the introduction of the scheme, Huq’s composite indicator across Restaurants, QSR and Pubs had been averaging in the early-40’s since around the time that dine-in re-opened on July 4th.
Reports suggest that the Monday-to-Wednesday, 50% off discount was used more than 64m times in its first three weeks and there have been calls on the government to extend the scheme following its overwhelming success.
However, the knock-on effect appears to have worked, and mobile geo-data suggests that while the Chancellors scheme has been hugely popular Monday-to-Wednesday, it has also given consumers greater confidence in visiting Pubs and Restaurants throughout the week. Further analysis of mobile geo-data in the coming weeks will reveal if the pub remains as popular as it’s been after the scheme ends this evening.
Huq has created this index with thanks to Peter Backman for his invaluable contribution in constructing this indicator, based on his insights and experience within the foodservice market.
