Customer footfall across Italy’s hospitality sector has increased by in excess of 500% following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions on 18 May, however it remains at around a third of pre-lockdown levels as the ‘shape of recovery’ remains unclear.
According to Huq’s Key Industries Indicator for Italy, customers visiting the country’s bars, cafes and restaurants even climbed to the point of exceeding footfall to supermarkets for the first time since enforced closures came into effect on 11 March.
While this flurry of activity reflects a strong pent-up demand for hospitality, how the sector recovers and adjusts to the ‘new normal’ – with its strict social distancing conditions – will become clearer with time.
The way that different industries have responded to lockdown lifts around the world offer some clues as to what the future holds for Italy and other markets. In Australia, where some pubs and restaurants have been allowed to open under social distancing conditions for the last two weeks, Huq’s Key Consumer Indicator for Australia show that the change in behaviour has been much milder (an increase of some 200% from a very low base) and reports suggest that trading in these new circumstances will remain a tough challenge.
While it’s clear a return to normal will take time, with data showing that demand for these businesses remains high, there are some green shoots starting to appear for caffes, ristoranti, bars and trattorias in Italy and beyond.
