COVID-19 and quarantining forced most people to alter their fitness routine. While some mobile fitness apps managed to get traction with consumers, the reality is that commitment to a new habit is difficult, as illustrated by the data.
Based on a sample of 11 popular mobile fitness apps, data from Apptopia show that COVID-19 had a significant impact on their rate of downloads. In January there was a 60% increase in downloads, totaling 3.37 million in just one month. This spike was most likely caused by initial quarantining in select parts of the world. Once Europe and the US entered lockdown there was another sharp increase in March and April, with 3.70 and 4.37 million downloads, respectively.
The number of customer sessions in the apps mirrors the number of downloads and could be a sign that people are sticking to the new routine. However, a slight decrease in the number of sessions in June leaves the question unanswered for the moment.
Looking at the revenue collected by the apps, the data suggest a temporary impact from COVID-19 when comparing to the second half of 2019. This could have been a result of promotions and free trials that fitness apps offered consumers during lockdown. Those discounted periods typically last just 30 to 60 days.
When the pandemic hit, most fitness centers relied on their mobile apps while some even increased their virtual capabilities. Despite these efforts, data show that monetization rates for the software investments may not have been realized as of yet. The virtual fitness industry generates over $1.5 billion per year, globally. There is ample demand to allow for innovation and disruption as home workouts become mainstream, on the way to a $15 billion industry by 2027 according to a report by Reports and Data.
