People are rediscovering the great outdoors with a new enthusiasm that we did not see in our data last summer. Why? Entertainment options may be closed for now but you can’t close the great outdoors. It’s giving people something to do while they can’t do anything.
After highlighting fishing apps and the Randonautica app in my newsletter earlier in the year, I decided to take it a step further and look at more apps that one would use if engaging in outdoor activities. After some simple keyword searching in Apptopia combined with a little click and sort magic, I pulled the top RV rental, astronomy, camping and fishing apps.
By the way, RV stands for recreational vehicle. I never knew this and I hope I taught you something. Keep reading if you want to learn more.
Yes, summertime means better weather but given those nice year-over-year gains, this is about a heightened urge to get out of our homes. And I’m right there with everyone else as I was recently convinced to stay in a box in the woods for a few nights next month.
RV rental apps grew the most, really taking off in April. You can see in the chart below that downloads of these apps were stagnating/trending downward this time last year, whereas this year they are soaring.
We have a fantastic newsletter planned for you this Friday morning
Take a closer look at the top three fishing apps and you’ll see Fishbrain is the clear winner. Not only does this app help you know where you can catch what, but it also doubles as a niche social media network to show off your catch. Fishbrain offers a “Pro” version available via an in-app purchase, which has netted the app $2.8 million since April.
People are itching to get out and it have done so in droves. It seems for travel, trust has been higher in accommodations like Airbnbs and VRBOs than hotels.
