The top 10 quick-service restaurant apps in the U.S. in February were downloaded 7.8 million times, 21.7 percent less than those the month prior. This is a big drop, but it’s a seasonal one. December, and Q4 in general, tend to be the strongest time for QSR app activity. Adjusting for seasonality and looking at year-over-year data, downloads for top QSR apps in February are up 13% as customers become more mobile savvy and brands invest more heavily in digital real estate.
News app downloads are spiking in the United States as people tune into Russia's war on Ukrainian sovereignty. News providers are being used for this much more than aggregators. CNN and Fox News are the largest in terms of absolute numbers, however, the Washington Post app was downloaded more on 2/19/22 (before the invasion) than any other day in its lifetime, with about 15k new installs globally.
After launching in July 2020, Comcast's Peacock TV has been installed on 50 million mobile devices and generated $45 million via in-app purchases. All of this is in the United States, the only market where the app is available for use. The one-two punch of the Super Bowl and the Olympics has enabled the app to reach a new record for daily downloads (339.4k on 2/16/22) and IAP revenue ($335.3k on 2/16/22). NBC had streaming rights to both highly anticipated sporting events.
Health and fitness apps have a predictable spike in downloads, revenue and usage every late December through January. For regular category leaders, like Calm, MyFitnessPal and Planet Fitness, rank may increase nominally with the seasonal intention-setting. The real story is of who shows up for the first time – especially if they sustain Top Chart status into mid-February.
On Valentine’s Day, love is in the air but does it drive people to install dating apps? Looking at monthly data, dating app downloads in the U.S. actually tend to drop in February from January and rise up again in March. In-app purchase revenue follows the exact same pattern. 2020 was an exception, with March continuing the downtrend due to the onset of the pandemic. But what about on the holiday itself and/or leading up to it? There is a slight uptick, again with the exception of 2020, leading into Valentine's Day.

Compared to the other U.S.-specific commerce markets featured in the report (such as Brick and Mortar, Fast Fashion, Consumer-to-Consumer and Luxury), D2C is the strongest next to Luxury.

Netflix's 13 mobile games have been installed more than eight million times since they launched on November 3, 2021. Not all 13 games were released simultaneously, but five did go live on day one. You can see the staggered release schedule in the image below. Last November, Netflix began bundling mobile games into its subscription at no extra cost. You can find the games in your Netflix app or through the app stores, as they are available to download and launch separately. However, a Netflix subscription is required to play the games.
Food delivery app growth and engagement declined and stagnated in 2021. A worrying trend line for the market that ended 2020 with multiple billion-dollar acquisitions and DoorDash’s $60.2B public market debut. The top six players in U.S. food delivery are DoorDash and Caviar, GrubHub and Seamless, Uber Eats and Postmates. 2020 was a banner year with Apptopia data showing a 12% lift in total sessions, comparing January with December. During that time, GrubHub was acquired for $7.3B by European food delivery company Just Eat Takeaway, and Uber Eats bought Postmates for $2.65B.
In the United States, mobile shopping leaders in 2021 slightly favored logistics heavyweights, but it’s wearing off. Amazon maintained its #1 position from 2020 and Shopify’s Shop app moved up one spot to #3 after a year of strategic partnerships essentially made the app a hub for tracking the transit of all your non-Amazon orders. You can find our full list of 2021 worldwide download leaders here, and compare them with 2020's most downloaded apps. If you need to fully understand what a download is and what it does/does not measure, we have that for you as well.
Apptopia estimates indicate December 2021 closed out with 6.8 million MAUs for the top sportsbook mobile apps combined, in the United States. A slew of states legalizing the industry this year has certainly aided the 199% year-over-year growth for the month of December. Sportsbook app downloads spiked 297% m/m (month-over-month) in September with 2.9 million installs, due to the start of NFL season. They then fell 31% m/m and continued to fall until December.

The Crypto.com app recently (early January '21) hit 50 million downloads since launch in 2017. Most (82%) of those downloads came in 2021, making the app the second most downloaded crypto app globally in the calendar year.

Congratulations, if you're reading this it means you have made it through the year! 2021 is over and as our gift to you, Apptopia has our annual download leader charts ready to go. Below are 30 top charts across a plethora of high interest industries. All data is iOS + Google Play combined, except for data from China which is iOS only. If an app has a "lite" version, that data is included in the respective app's data. We created these categories ourselves and had to make decisions on distinctions. In general, we tried to group apps with the same primary function together.
Public equity investors use Apptopia's app data estimates to identify leading indicators and trend shifts in tickers six to eight weeks ahead of consensus. Apptopia's data is quite literally a clairvoyance in equity trading (we won't haunt your house though). Apptopia's Director of Equity Research, Tom Grant, recently chatted with Neudata to discuss travel industry trends as COVID-19 continues to shape the sector. Car rental companies, like everyone else in the industry, have taken a hit from COVID.
The top five BNPL (buy now, pay later) app downloads hit 6.8M downloads this past November, a 54% increase over last November, while MAUs have grown 63% YoY. The top five apps are Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm, Zip and Sezzle. There are other smaller players too such as Spotii and Four. Klarna is clearly the largest player in the space, with its market share of new users holding steady. Earlier this year, we interviewed Klarna’s CMO (David Sandstrom) after the company ran a commercial during the Super Bowl.
Apptopia CEO Jonathan Kay recently gave a keynote speech at Airship’s Elevate conference, showcasing the need for brands to invest into their mobile apps due to consumers' shifting behavioral patterns. The below is an excerpt from that presentation. To watch the whole presentation, scroll to the bottom of this post. The Dunkin’ mobile app has been growing engagement since August, when it was announced the app was available via Apple CarPlay. Apptopia’s X-Ray dataset indicates it is the only top 36 quick-service restaurant app in the United States with this integration.
I don't know about you, but cutting the cord was quite a daunting task that I chose to take on earlier this year (apparently I am very late to the party). How would I possibly survive without being able to watch the Patriots every Sunday, and the Bachelor every Monday? Thanks to a strong internet connection and Live TV streaming apps, I never had to find out. Live TV streaming apps have grown in popularity as they allow fans to stream their favorite shows and sports live, without needing to pay for an additional cable service.
