Peloton is trying to eat Lululemon’s lunch, or protein-enhanced kale meal replacement smoothie, as the case may be. The high-end athletic apparel retailer filed suit against Peloton in late November, stating the fitness company’s designs for their new line of leggings and sports bras constitute patent infringement. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the lawsuit finds Lululemon seeking an injunction against Peloton, in addition to a jury trial, damages and other monetary relief.

From Placer
In this Placer Bytes, we dive into two of retail’s strongest players – Dick’s Sporting Goods and Best Buy. Off-Price’s Strong Summer

From Placer
The off-price apparel category is experiencing an impressive recovery, with off-price visits regularly outperforming the wider apparel recovery rate. With the Back to School season coming up, Off-price’s strong summer could lead into an even stronger fall. With the exception of February, where lower visit numbers could be due to severe weather conditions across the country, visits to Ross Dress for Less, T.J. Maxx, and Burlington have been up every month this year when compared to 2019.

With the Push Towards Electric, Which Automakers Advertise Most?

From MediaRadar
Only 1% of cars on American roads today are electric. But a decade from now, this won’t be the case. Between growing consumer interest, a policy push from the Biden administration and support from automakers themselves, we’ll see electric vehicles (EVs) become more of a norm than a luxury. Though the automotive industry went through the wringer last year and advertising plummeted, EV advertising in 2021 has already surpassed spending from the first seven months of 2019.

Spend from Home Fridays

From Consumer Edge Research
As more offices reopen, they are reopening with one important change from pre-pandemic workstyles – fewer days on site. Many companies have shifted from a Monday through Friday in-office week to more common work from home Fridays or even Fridays and Mondays. This shift has left many downtown businesses dependent on commuter dollars empty and overstaffed on Fridays.

Shop 'Til You Drop: How Retailers Are Utilizing Digital Marketing to Recover From the Pandemic

From Pathmatics
As vaccination numbers rise, no one is more excited to welcome back consumers than department stores. Brick-and-mortar retailers were already struggling before the pandemic as malls fell out of fashion and Amazon expanded its online shopping empire. And as you would expect, a deadly virus didn’t make things any easier. Sales plummeted when COVID-19 closed stores for weeks on end. Barney’s, JCPenney, Neiman Marcus, and Lord & Taylor were among dozens of iconic retailers that filed for bankruptcy during the pandemic.

Tracking The Evolution Of Global TV Viewing

From Nielsen
As the cornerstone of many living rooms around the world, the TV set remains a fixture for media consumption. That consumption, however, looks much different than it did a few years ago. Just as it has in the U.S., the market where Netflix was born, connected TV (CTV) adoption and streaming enablement are redefining how global consumers are spending their TV time. In aggregate, linear television remains the best way to reach mass audiences, but reach levels are dropping between 2% and 3% each year as viewing behaviors fragment across the growing variety of streaming content.

Home Improvement Somehow Still Hot

From Placer
The home improvement sector thrived during the pandemic – and at first glance, that run seemed to be over. Critically, this was less an indictment on the success of the sector’s leaders than a testament to the heights reached during the pandemic. So how has the summer treated the sector? While Tractor Supply continued its impressive growth streak – with visits in July up a whopping 29.7% compared to July 2020 – year-over-year foot traffic at Home Depot and Lowe’s has been down over the last three months.

Walmart and Target’s Big Summer

From Placer
In the latest sign of their Brick-and-Mortar retail dominance, both Walmart and Target appear to be headed into an exceptionally strong Back-to-School season. Both Walmart and Target were positioned relatively well during the early pandemic restrictions because of their essential retail status. And they both proved equally well positioned for the mission-driven shopping trend that privileged their one-stop-shop orientation, leading to a recovery period that showed comparable strength.

In contrast, the UK history of publicly provided television and radio has led to very different trends as private services have become closer to the norm.
