As people start to feel the threat of the new Delta Variant, Southwest Airlines is experiencing its effect firsthand. The COVID-19 pandemic shut down airports worldwide and Southwest was no exception, seeing an 89.65% decrease in foot traffic as measured by Advan between April 2019 and April 2020. According to The Dallas Morning News, “On April 14, 2020, only 87,534 passengers went through Transportation Security Information checkpoints in U.S. airports, the fewest number of travelers since the 1950s.”

As vaccination numbers rise, no one is more excited to welcome back consumers than department stores. Brick-and-mortar retailers were already struggling before the pandemic as malls fell out of fashion and Amazon expanded its online shopping empire. And as you would expect, a deadly virus didn’t make things any easier. Sales plummeted when COVID-19 closed stores for weeks on end. Barney’s, JCPenney, Neiman Marcus, and Lord & Taylor were among dozens of iconic retailers that filed for bankruptcy during the pandemic.
As the cornerstone of many living rooms around the world, the TV set remains a fixture for media consumption. That consumption, however, looks much different than it did a few years ago. Just as it has in the U.S., the market where Netflix was born, connected TV (CTV) adoption and streaming enablement are redefining how global consumers are spending their TV time. In aggregate, linear television remains the best way to reach mass audiences, but reach levels are dropping between 2% and 3% each year as viewing behaviors fragment across the growing variety of streaming content.
The amount of time employees stay with a single company can tell us a lot about the regional labor market. Short tenures can be a sign of labor market instability, but can also be a consequence of a natural dynamism in regional labor markets, as employees and employers go through several iterations to find a good fit. Below, we take a look at the median employee tenure by country.
The home improvement sector thrived during the pandemic – and at first glance, that run seemed to be over. Critically, this was less an indictment on the success of the sector’s leaders than a testament to the heights reached during the pandemic. So how has the summer treated the sector? While Tractor Supply continued its impressive growth streak – with visits in July up a whopping 29.7% compared to July 2020 – year-over-year foot traffic at Home Depot and Lowe’s has been down over the last three months.
India has witnessed a rapid migration to mobile broadband services over the past five years, growing from 22.4%, of the more than 1 billion mobile connections in the country, on either 3G or 4G networks at the end of 2016, to over 70% by Q2 2021 according to GSMA Intelligence. Rapidly falling data prices, spurred by the arrival of Jio in the market, have contributed to strong increases in mobile data consumption. This trend has only accelerated as more video streaming services have targeted the market and as a result of recent COVID-19-related lockdowns.

Few footwear choices have garnered such polarized opinions as Crocs ($CROX), whose signature foam clogs have developed loyal fans among medical professionals and home gardeners alike. In recent months, the shoe company has skyrocketed in popularity with Gen Z shoppers in particular, perhaps in part due to celebrity endorsements and even fast food partnerships. In any case, Crocs reported a >60% increase in sales last quarter, and the company expects yet another uptick this year.
All key markets in China showed June 2021 increases in hotel occupancy and average daily rate (ADR) compared to the same period last year, except for Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Guangzhou occupancy dropped to 27.6%, which was the market’s lowest level of the last 15 months. Thus, RevPAR dropped 50.5% year over year, which was 71.1% lower compared with June 2019. Because of the severe pandemic impact on performance data, STR is using 2019 as the industry’s recovery benchmark.
In the latest sign of their Brick-and-Mortar retail dominance, both Walmart and Target appear to be headed into an exceptionally strong Back-to-School season. Both Walmart and Target were positioned relatively well during the early pandemic restrictions because of their essential retail status. And they both proved equally well positioned for the mission-driven shopping trend that privileged their one-stop-shop orientation, leading to a recovery period that showed comparable strength.
With Robinhood’s IPO a little more than a week behind us, plenty of headlines detail how the stock is performing. But we wanted to know: how is the retail investment app advertising, and how does it compare to other investment firms? Last month we discussed how Robinhood’s programmatic spending increased significantly in the lead-up to its IPO. It went from spending barely any on the format to becoming the top programmatic spender in its category.

Consumer confidence has risen to its highest levels yet since the onset of the pandemic. And while many consumers are planning to buy homes, cars and major appliances in the coming months, there are still about 2 million homeowners behind on their mortgage payments and/or in forbearance programs. Nevertheless, as COVID-19-related economic restrictions lessen and federal- and state-level protections expire, so will the forbearance programs.

In today’s Insight Flash, we look at how this disruption differs in the US versus the UK, comparing market share and growth rates for streaming. In the US, Video Streaming has continued to grow its share of total media spend among tracked companies since the beginning of 2019. Share in June 2021 was almost double that of January 2019 at 13%. In contrast, the UK history of publicly provided television and radio has led to very different trends as private services have become closer to the norm.
